Wienstein & Gavinos
1434 Crescent St.

Mon.-Wed. 11 a.m.-11 p.m., Thu-Fri. 11 a.m.-Midnight., Sun Noon-11 p.m. Licensed, major cards. 288-2231
I actually went to Wienstein & Gavinos on the basis of their menu online. I was unhappified. The traditional Montreal service was incredibly evident in the lax manner of the staff. Our waiter was indifferent to the maximum, almost bordering on surly, offering no suggestions or anything else, for that matter, other than "Are you ready to order?"

The pasta was tired and greasy, my Carbonara a parody of too many eggs, nameless cheese and chewy pancetta on a bed of overcooked "spaghettini." My friend's ragu de viande was, to use my favorite phrase, a Price Club original.

There was a waiters' station not twelve feet from our table, yet twenty minutes after we were obviously finished, there were four and sometimes five wait-persons clustering around, gossiping and laughing. Eventually, I actually had to flag someone down to take it all away. This was at 6:30 pm on a Friday evening! This is Montreal service, folks, at least in the more pedestrian venues. So take the online menus with a teaspoon of salt.

It's a 2 out of ten. —
