Pistou Déjeuner is an insanely popular place that has just undergone renovations and expanded. Built into what used to be a two-storey apartment unit, Pistou makes you feel as if you’ve barged into someone’s morning-after-slumber party. There is a line to get in, but it’s a small one, and not one but two people poke their heads outside at various intervals to let you know how much time you’ve got to wait.

Once inside, it’s busy and noisy, with waitstaff buzzing everywhere like dervishes on crack carrying large platters of heaping breakfast indispensables, frequently up the stairs to what is obviously a recently renovated room painted in saffron yellow and ventilated by ceiling fans.

There are eggs—many, many eggs—at Pistou. A sample: Poached eggs on English Muffins coated with Mornay sauce, with bacon; potato galettes with pleurotes, poached eggs in Béchamel sauce and Brie; “Il était un oeuf dans le ouest”: mushroom, peppers, onion and ham omelette . . . need I go on? The menu does, for pages. But life needn’t be complicated: a veritable feast of two eggs, home fries, sausage and fresh fruit can be had for $4.75.

For those of you who like a little tipple with your nibbles, there’s a small, very-reasonably priced wine list, with a Château Cruzeau coming tops at $40. Again, your Visa card won’t work here, though they do take Interac. —
