This is a little slice of dumpling heaven. It's an informal place with greater emphasis on homey, MSG-free cooking and fresh ingredients than on decor or snappy service. The joz (dumplings) are done in the Beijing style—more flat and plump, the crinkled packet of dough stuffed with gingery minced chicken and Chinese cabbage.

Ten of these go for $2.50 steamed, $3.50 fried and $4.50 in a soup. Packages of frozen, ready-to-cook joz also can be bought here. Main courses of duck, pork or chicken and vegetables like deep-fried eggplant have their own distinctive flavourings and spicing. These include ginger, garlic, star anise and Chinese five-spice powder.
