Early eighties San Francisco. You'Il love this little grocery store-cum restaurant, at the tip of the island on the shores of Lac Saint-Louis. Lots of regulars. It plays with spices, land and seafood, and draws its inspiration from the California cuisine of the eighties. Herb's is a basically vegetarian resto which compromises its principles for its sandwiches, much as Québec's normally vigilant "tongue troopers" seem to have done with theirs for that seditious apostrophe. Efficient service from the tiny kitchen overlooking the tiny dining room. Serve yourself a juice from the glass-front fridge.

Sample menu: Soupe du jour, Japanese salad, veggie sandwich, antipasto sandwich, hot tuna sandwich, black bean burritos, chocolate cheesecake, homemade pies, biscuits, carrot juice, daily juice.
