Continental, Le
4169 Saint-Denis. Mont-Royal métro

Tel. 845-6842. Tuesday to Saturday, 6 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Sunday and Monday, 6 p.m. to midnight. $55 for two before wine, taxes and service.
Efficient and manly bistro service. Christian Beaulieu, the new chef, has not only attracted new customers, but harder still, he's won the admiration of the old. The bistro Continental has decidedly improved its cuisine, making this a place to return to. Moreover, many do. Both the bar and the dining area ring with the peals of close companionship. Pretty dessert plates. Real fries. They feature a good variety of wines by the glass. Meals are available until the wee hours, which could explain the prevalence of actors amongst the clientele. If you don't eat here, you're not in the actors' union.

Sample menu: Saffron cream of clam soup, salmon tartar, tartelette forestière, quail rillettes, pot-roasted wild mushrooms, suprême de volaille cooked in ginger and honey, duck preserve with cider and apples, salmon croustillant with pears and coriander, pear sultan, Cortez cake, homemade apple pie.
