It's business as usual at the Saint-Denis Commensal, the ONLY uniquely vegetarian BYOB in town. Line up, buffet-style (there are no waiters here, so you save by not having to leave a tip), and fill your plate with a smorgasbord of meat-free delights, which you pay for by weight! Chinese noodles, lasagna, Paté chinois, pizza, broccoli in bechamel, and many others all figure in the constantly restocked buffet. The salads, too, are great, and you custom-make your own from a choice so fresh and large that it makes most other salad bars look like junk food!

Take a big wooden table downstairs, where the contrast between the wood and the exposed stone walls and the amber-green suspended lighting creates a country cottage type of feel. If you're looking for a little mood and romance, avoid the brighter, modern upstairs, unless you want a great dessert from the sweets buffet.

For a romantic four-course dinner with wine, there is but one glitch at Le Commensal: if you want to pace the meal slowly, and have the courses come one by one (soup, salad, main meal, dessert and coffee/tea), you must get up, choose your food, and pay a total of four times! We've tried bringing the food to the table all at once, and the meal was over in twenty minutes!
