Everywhere you turn, from the sculpted Buddhas to carved-wood panels, Chang Thai exudes elegance. The food builds on this sense of bliss. A peanut sauce served with shrimp crackers was authentic in the use of coarsely crushed, roasted peanuts.

Kang Masaman Nua with beef was fiery, the thick and dark curry velvety with coconut milk. Chunks of potatoes simmered in the same sauce were comforting, with whole cashews as the garnish. Red snapper was served in a sauce dominated by chile and lots of sautded sweet basil leaves. Mango salad was a refreshing and piquant toss of sour green mango, onion, green chile, lime juice, fresh coriander and mint.
