Cakao
5090 Fabre Street (corner Laurier)

598-2462, closed Monday

If you saw the film Chocolate you will instantly feel that you know Maison Cakao. This little room at the eastern edge of the Plateau has the most delicious aromas in town. There is chocolate, chocolate and nothing else: no greeting cards, balloons or mugs for sale, just a little heaven sold by the gram. Edith Gagnon is a graduate of Quebec's Hotel and Restaurant Institute, where she majored in chocolate.

She imports blocks of Barry Chocolate (no relation!) from France and heats and swirls it into delectable bon-bons. Small bars of bittersweet melt slowly on the tongue. Chocolate crusted citrus is sublime. Her ganache mixed with Earl Grey tea and bergamot is an astounding blend of flavours. Gagnon is also meticulous in wrapping her chocolates. Even an order of a couple of candies gets a beautiful presentation.—
