Il Fornetto
1900 St. Joseph Blvd.

Open daily from 11:30 a.m. to midnight. Licensed. Acccepts major credit cards. 637-5253.
Known for its view of the Lachine Canal, this local landmark also provides a better-than-suburban grade of Italian food, with a full menu as well as the popular pizzas ($8 to $11), which come thin and crunchy from a wood burning oven. Pastas are available in half-orders, and there's a good range of appetizers and salads, so that customers have plenty of control over how much they eat --and how much they pay.

A dish of grilled pleurottes mushrooms ($7.75) was nicely drizzled with balsamic vinegar, but had barely heen grilled. But a pasta puttanesca managed the ideal combination of onion, capers and black olives. while a main dish salmon trout ($22.95 with an appetizer) was perfect, garnished with five different vegetables, all crisp-tender.
