Montreal is an island. Nothing on the island is further from downtown than a half-hour drive, unless there's traffic. Most restaurants listed should be within a $25 cab fare. If you must know where you are, download the superb maps below, made by the City of Montreal. They're in French, but what do you want? You need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view them (aww, go on and download it now—you've been putting it off for so long and you're going to visit a MILLION sites which tell you to download it and I've made the link absolutely painless because that's my business, that's why they call me Dr. Numb, they really do, but don't ask who "they" is, so quit procrastinating and do it now!)
